It’s 35°C outside, and it’s only 9 am. That’s what the read-out on the Jimny’s dash says. We’re on the road to Pofadder in the Northern Cape, but we could be on Mars because that’s how different this landscape is to home. Home is Cape Town, where I woke up at 4 am for a red-eye flight to Upington to kick off this grand adventure.
I remember watching the TV weather forecast years ago with twisted curiosity just to catch a glimpse of the summer-time highs in Upington. This sunfrazzled area owes its existence to the Orange River, or Garib, a 2 200 km lifeline flowing from Lesotho, westwards, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean…
