SASHEER ZAMATA ISN’T WAITING FOR YOU TO SAY YES

WHILE SOME HAVE USED THE PANDEMIC PERIOD TO REMOVE THEM-selves from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, comedienne Sasheer Zamata has remained on the grind. The star of ABC’s Home Economics and Hulu’s Woke (Season 2 of which drops in 2022), Zamata is excited to get back on the road touring to prepare for her upcoming comedy special, which is also due out this year. Between her busy television schedule, her stand-up dates, and her podcast Best Friends with best friend and fellow comedian Nicole Byer, Zamata is busy but grateful. “Those are the things I’m up to, which are all fun things I love doing, and I feel very fortunate [to work with] people like them.”

It’s a bright and sunny afternoon in Los Angeles when we connect by phone, which Zamata says is ironic because the Home Economics Christmas episode drops later that day. Over the course of our conversation, she discussed her path to comedy, finding her voice at Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB), her thoughts on cannabis reform and the benefit to betting on yourself.

“I THINK PEOPLE CAN TELL WHEN YOU’RE ENJOYING YOURSELF. I THINK AUDIENCES HAVE MORE FUN WHEN THEY’RE WATCHING SOMEONE WHO IS TRULY ENJOYING WHAT THEY’RE DOING, AND I THINK PEOPLE WANT TO WORK WITH THOSE TYPES OF PEOPLE.”
