HOW TO… Buy en primeur

Traditionally, buying en primeur was a wine lover’s way of securing an allocation of a popular wine at the lowest possible price, paying for the wine before it is bottled. It doesn’t always work out that way these days, but en primeur continues to be the method by which the most sought-after wines are sold. Here are some tips for success:

1 Know your risk. Your en primeur contract will not be underwritten by the producer, so research your supplier carefully.

2 Assess the. How rare is the wine? Is this a good vintage, and how have similar vintages performed price-wise? How has the wine been received by critics? And how might the global economy affect prices?
