One Escape at a Time

n “One Escape at a Time,” artistic director Yung Ma looked at the many creative potentials, and problems, with the idea (2021), depicts a tranquil, romantic mountaintop scene—except it is pixelated and there are giant mushroom tops and a can of Spam growing off to one side. Eisa Jocson’s karaoke video (2021) juxtaposed entertainment tropes of fun with the realworld struggles of healthcare workers. In a satirical rendition of adopting a myopic vision of the world, Li Liao recorded himself out in the empty streets of Wuhan during the lockdown, balancing on his hand a large wooden pole with a red plastic bag on top, in (2020). Young Hae Chang Heavy Industries’ text animation with a jazzy accompanying soundtrack, (2021), about an executive employee who dies at his desk and is reincarnated as various objects like a smartphone, paper cup, and a napkin, is the ultimate ironic escape from the material world.
