2021: Back in the game

After a 2020 that was incredibly challenging year for everyone, it looked like 2021 may follow a similar path as the UK spent the early part of the year behind closed doors. But slowly, those doors unlocked, and in the end we were able to enjoy a busy year of classic motoring – one that could build on the innovation, dedication and enthusiasm shown during lockdown.

It wasn’t all plain sailing, especially at the petrol pumps, but it’s certainly been memorable. So join us as we look back on the big stories of 2021 – the year that saw us meet again.

JANUARY

FRAUDSTERS TAKE TO FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE

With the country firmly ensconced in lockdown at the beginning of 2021, online transactions remained vital in ensuring the classic car world could continue to trade. Sadly though, it also kept the door wide open for cybercriminals. As we revealed, Facebook Marketplace was increasingly being used to rip classic car fans off.

A group called ‘Facebook vehicle scam alerts’ had been set up to help raise awareness, but the ads could still remain online for more than a week. Sadly, the problem has not gone away and fraudulent listings continue to proliferate.

RED TAPE FOR RESTORERS

A storm of post-Brexit red tape, delivery issues and Covid-19-related problems led to significant delays when sourcing classic car parts from overseas. Restorers and specialists faced couriers pausing services and increasing charges, along with some overseas suppliers either suspending sales to the UK, putting a minimum price threshold on, or charging extra to cover their time. Meanwhile, new rules meant classic cars imported from the EU to the UK remained duty free but faced an additional five per cent VAT charge.

Other headlines in January:

• Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group completed their $52 billion tie-up and formally merged under a new name – Stellantis.

• Lotus announced that iconic Elise is ceasing production in 2021, with the existing Exige and Evora models also to be retired.

• Rémy Julienne, the stunt driver behind The Italian Job chase sequence and six James Bond films, sadly passed away at the age of 90.
