An easy and rewarding warm-season crop, sweet potato is not even remotely related to the potato but is a member of the morning glory family Convolvulaceae, originating in South America.
It’s thought the perennial vine was domesticated around 2500 BCE and its popularity spread around the globe even as far as the Pacific Islands and New Zealand, which is why you’ll often hear it called by its Maori name kumara.
