How did the Dune Wars mod originally come about?

The idea for the mod for was discussed in a Civfanatics thread back in 2005, the same year the base game launched. Following much discussion, more threads and in May 2009. The key members of the team from this point became David Allen (coder who wrote the spice blow and sandworm gameplay code), Ahriman (designer and frequent play-tester), Koma13 (user interface legend who created the beautiful City and Homeworld screens) and myself (initially artwork focused, but eventually design and coding too).
