Hydrow

£2295 + £38/m / stuff.tv/Hydrow

Rowing engages 86% of the body’s muscles, which explains why 20 minutes at the gym leaves your arms wobbling and lungs bursting. It’s dull, though, which is where this 218cm-long behemoth of a connected rower comes in – with 1000s of classes filmed on some of the world’s most picturesque waterways.

The 22in Android-powered touchscreen has all the metrics you could ever need (and a leaderboard if that’s your thing), while the super-smooth seat and rowing mechanism make being in pain surprisingly comfortable.

Most of the Hydrow workouts last 20 minutes, which is long enough; the coaches are enthusiastic and engaging, and come without the offputting glitz and glamour of the spin-bike circuit. In fact, we found ourselves going back for more – which would never happen in the gym.
