Frederick Southey was born in 1870 to William and Elizabeth Southey of Varkenskop, now Manor Holme, in the Middelburg district of the Cape Colony. William, a livestock farmer, was the son of Sir Richard Southey, who became colonial secretary, a member of the House of Assembly for Grahamstown, lieutenant-governor of Griqualand West, and a confidant of Sir Harry Smith, governor of the Cape Colony.
Southey was the baby of the family in 1872 when the area experienced a catastrophic flood.
