We all know of the LMS ‘3F’ 0-6-0T as the ‘Jinty’. However but no-one has ever positively established where the sobriquet came from, and the compiler first volume of anew Irwell Press series admits that he doesn’t know either.

Preservation (ten examples) has been kind to this remarkable mass production class that did anything asked of it, working in all corners of the UK. It was in production right up to the moment that the LMS switched to its natural successor, the ubiquitous 0-6-0 diesel shunter. However, the steam class steadfastly avoided regular withdrawals until 1959.
