Can you still retire to an EU country?

MANY PEOPLE dream of retiring abroad, perhaps joining family who have already moved, or simply to enjoy a sunnier climate, a slower pace of life and lower cost of living.

Recent research by Canada Life found that more than two-thirds (69 per cent) of people considering retiring to another country are in search of warmer weather, almost as many (62 per cent) want a better lifestyle, and 45 per cent are looking for cheaper living costs.

However, since Brexit, it is not so easy to move to popular destinations within the EU, such as Spain, Portugal and France. You can no longer simply up sticks and embark on anew life. And, indeed, Canada Life’s research also found that half of the over-50s who are thinking about, or planning on, moving abroad when they retire are reconsidering where they might go to due to Brexit, up from 46 per cent in 2020.
