THE LURE OF LAUNCESTON

My son and his wife moved to Launceston, Tasmania for a one year contract in 2021. Michael is an extremely keen angler who has often featured in the pages of this magazine since he was a little kid, and the move to Tasmania thrust him into a totally different fishing environment chasing species he was pretty unfamiliar with. Due to Covid travel restrictions it was difficult to arrange a window of travel, but eventually in September I managed to get away for a few days that coincided with Michael’s days off. He’d planned out the trip quite carefully and we’d be fishing the lakes and rivers around Launceston targeting a range of species in both fresh and salt water.

Mick has turned out to be a very smart quite creative angler who uses his technology well. His 4.4 metre Mako Craft is a great little boat that is well fitted out and is very well organised. Mick had spent a fair amount of time in 2021 chasing trout in his local lakes relatively close to Launceston, and had found a few successful patterns that produced some good fish.
