KEEPING THE SPARK STRONG

Steve Turchet wrote a comprehensive, thorough, and accurate presentation on military batteries (see “Military Vehicle Battery Care” in issue no. 217, June 2021). He provided plenty of really good information. My take on the matter is “period correct” military batteries are high-maintenance, short-lived, and under-powered.

I usually have 8 to 10 historic military vehicles in my collection. All but the Mule require two batteries. That’s a lot of batteries — and expensive, too!

I use tow 51 series in gas-powered 1/4-ton to 5/4-ton vehicles. They are the same size as the military 2HN and have significantly more cold-cranking amps.

I use 35 series in the CUCVs instead of the military 6TNs. 6TN batteries weigh approximately 73 lbs. each which is a tremendous overload on the right inner fender.
