As the lights twinkled, Christmas filled the air.
It was December 2016, and families were gathering together to celebrate.
But one family could not muster any festive joy.
Weeks earlier, 16-year-old Desiree Robinson had gone missing.
She’d been staying with her grandparents, on the south side of Chicago.
They’d warned her the streets were dangerous. That she needed to watch out for herself.
But on 29 November, she’d gone out with friends and hadn’t come home.
Her grandfather Dennis Treadwell had filed a missing person’s report.
