Outlander is a TV phenomenon with legions of devoted fans worldwide. Before the pandemic, the ‘Outlander effect’ was credited for boosting tourism to Scotland by 17 per cent, with locations featured in the show having up to 200 per cent more visitors through the door. A survey of tourists on the Isle of Skye found that half were there just because it features in the show’s opening credits.

Largely responsible for one of the UK’s biggest TV exports is Sam Heughan, who plays highlander with a heart Jamie Fraser, and has singlehandedly reminded the world what we here have always known – there’s nothing sexier than a Scotsman in a kilt. Despite killing his co-star Graham McTavish’s character Dougal MacKenzie a few years ago, the pair have become firm friends. Together they’ve made a travel show, , and written.
