BETWEEN AZALEAS AND SILVERGRASS AWARDED IN THE GOOD PLACE AWARD 2021
On Oct. 22, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) announced the winner of The Good Place Award 2021. Hosted by the MCST and co-organised by No. 640) by Lim Yeonghwan (professor, Hongik University) + D.LIM architects (principal, Kim Sunhyun). It is a tourist rest area in Hwangmaesan County Park in Hapcheon-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do, where Hapcheon-gun and residents collaborated on its development as a rest area and park that would harmonise with the surrounding natural scenery. Located 850m above sea level, the building stands with its back to the valley and mountains in the background, but its low height does not go against mountains. In the semicircular-shaped building, there are sporadic voids where azaleas in spring and silvergrass in fall enter through. The jury committee stated that the reason for its selection was its excellent harmonious design that does not compete with the beautiful natural scenery of the Hwangmae plain, and the strategy of creating and operating a public space that contributes to local society by promoting active collaboration with local governments and residents. Also five projects were nominated: Aloysius 1968 by Architects Opus (co-principals, Woo Daeseung, Cho Seongki, Kim Hyoungjong); AREA6 (covered in No. 641) by GAGAHOHO Architects (principal, O Seungtae); Saint Joseph Street at Junglim-dong by EVERYARCHITECTs (principal, Kang Jungeun); Observation Pavilion Imagination Circle Mt. Bulamsan by Jang Yoongyoo (Kookmin University) + Unsangdong Architects (principal, Shin Changhoon); Imlang Culture Park by BCHO Partners (principal, Cho Byoungsoo).
