THE TROUBLE WITH ENVY

Who do you envy? When we think about envy, or the people who arouse envy in us, it’s typically those we secretly admire. We want to be more like them, or have what they have, or do the same things that they do. But often admiration manifests as envy and, technically termed ‘piling on’. One person takes offence at a remark or image, and there’s an outpouring of resentment. The victim’s only response, in most instances, is to apologise for their indiscretion in the hope that the envy stampede peters out.
