Emily Gunnis: On my first day at Cardiff University, nearly 30 years ago, I met Clodagh Higginson. She had curly red hair and a wicked sense of humour, and we immediately clicked. She was a cool, Irish hippy and she thought I was a funny sort of toff.

Despite our differences, we were both lost souls and we became inseparable. During my first week at university she heard me crying on the phone home. She came over and asked, ‘Do you want to get a drink?’ From then on, we got up to all kinds of mischief together.
