Paul Sullivan: Loyola holds off DePaul 68-64 in the renewal of a Chicago rivalry that lives up to the hype

CHICAGO — DePaul and Loyola faced off the first time since 2012 on Saturday afternoon at Wintrust Arena, renewing a traditional city rivalry that fell by the wayside for reasons never really explained.

Why it ended doesn’t really matter now, and after Loyola was able to eek out a 68-64 win over the previously unbeaten Blue Demons, everyone agreed the matchup needs to be revived on an annual basis.

“Just a big-time college basketball atmosphere,” Loyola coach Drew Valentine said afterward. “We talked about it earlier this week. Lucas (Williamson) and I obviously came to Loyola together, and it was so fun to see two outstanding, traditional basketball programs
