One of the great anthems of my baby boomer youth was “My Generation” by The Who, with its immortal line, “I hope I die before I get old”. It perfectly summed up the times. Imagine being square like your parents or (shudder) your grandparents. The notion was too awful for rebellious 1960s teenagers to contemplate.
This attitude also informed our generation’s approach to risk. Drive the quickest car, ride the fastest bike, surf the biggest wave. It was as if we were immortal and if we weren’t, who cares, we won’t be here to worry about it.
These days I’m happy to get old before I die. Too many mates didn’t have the choice and I’ve been thinking about
