A mid flooded meadows and marshy woods of black poplar and crack willow, sits a garden of the most unusual quality and disposition. Held in the arms of the River Avon as it snakes south-east through Wiltshire on its circular journey towards the Bristol Channel, is a garden on an island: a literal oasis of serene detachment from the outside world. The island is, in fact, artificial – a working mill is recorded at this site in the Doomsday Book – with the river diverging through chases, weirs and millponds to leave the garden, and house, surrounded by water.
