That joy of summer, basil, can now be sown directly into the soil, or seedlings planted outside, in a sunny spot. Keep the soil moist but try to keep it off the leaves.

In the summer heat, to avoid bolting (that is, going to flower and seed prematurely) lettuce and coriander are best out of the midday sun.

Check if early potatoes are ready to harvest by burrowing your fingers into the base of one of the plants and feeling how big the potatoes are, a method also known as bandicooting.
