Hooking the buyers

Most successful pop music has what is called a ‘hook’ to grab the listeners’ attention and – perhaps more importantly – make it memorable. Just think how a particular clashing chord unfailingly tells Beatles’ fans they are about to enjoy a ‘Hard Day’s Night.’ And Elton John’s homage to Norma Jean – aka Marilyn Monroe – would be quite unremarkable without the brilliant ‘candle in the wind’ refrain.
