ALL THE PRESIDENT’S WOMEN Kamala Harris

As if the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States, in the eye of a pandemic wasn’t celebration enough … then came Kamala Harris, another beacon of hope for fairness, equality, empowerment and change. For her all-important inauguration ‘fashion moment’ as the first female Vice President of the United States, her choice of an electric purple dress and coat by Christopher John Rogers with a pearl necklace by Wilfredo Rosado made a clear statement about supporting American designers of colour. Harris’s wardrobe mirrors her beliefs and pursuit of inclusivity, flagging support through her choice of colours. The purple of the Rogers dress and coat were a nod to the suffragette movement symbolising loyalty, purpose and devotion to the cause. Harris’s style of favouring tailored pieces in monochrome colours is imbued with an approachable grounded quality, too. Her choice of pearls, referencing her membership in AKA (Alpha Kappa Alpha), the first Black Greek-letter college sorority founded in 1908 has become her trademark, as have sneakers, which we applaud.
