Pennant numbers

The Maritime Mosaic (SM, Oct) features a selection of naval vessels displaying pennant numbers and letters which are quite obvious: P for patrol, and F for frigate, for example. But the leading photo shows HMS Ark Royal, pennant number R07. So I wonder, why are carriers given the letter ‘R’ in their pennant? I would be interested to hear any suggestions as to why the prefix has is used.
