BEAR FLYOVERS

I thoroughly enjoyed the article “Bear of the Air” by Stephan Wilkinson [November], as the Tu-95 Bear is a remarkable bomber. I would like to submit a minor correction to the claim that no Bear ever surprised a U.S. carrier. I was a supply officer on USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) on two cruises in the Vietnam War zone in 1968 and 1969. On the first cruise we were overflown by a Myasishchev M-4 Bison, which two of our combat air patrol F-8 Crusaders intercepted. >
