1 Riemvasmaak

This settlement next to the Molopo River is about 60 km north of Kakamas. You can stay at the wellknown hot springs in a deep kloof. Self-catering cabin that sleeps four people R950 p.n. The campsite’s ablution facilities include showers and flush toilets. Camping R265 p.n. for the first two people, plus R75 per extra person; max six people per stand.

Swim in the hot springs, drive a 4x4 route (from R265 per vehicle per day) or hike in the veld (free if you stay over; R35 p.p. for day visitors). Day visitors are allowed from 9 am to 5 pm. Entry fee R70 per adult; R35 per child aged 3 – 16.

2 Augrabies Falls National Park

Many people who visit the Kgalagadi also include a visit to this arid park, where the Orange River tumbles 56 m into a gorge. The park is about 37 km north-west of Kakamas and has 59 self-catering units that sleep 2 – 6 people. Braai facilities, air conditioning and communal swimming pools. Units from R1 175 p.n. for two people.

The campsite has 40 stands with power points. The stands are on sand, but there are shade trees, sections of green lawn and braai facilities. The ablution facilities are clean. R300 p.n. for the first two people, plus R100 per extra adult and R50 per extra child under 11 (max six people per stand).

For the best view in the park, book the Oranjekom Cottage on the lip of the gorge about 10 km from the rest camp. R2 040 p.n. for two people.

Drive the game-viewing routes (67 km – 91 km) or hike the Dassie Trail (8 km; free) or the three-day Klipspringer Trail (40 km; R330 p.p.).

3 Khamkirri
