Part 1 of this series, published in the 19 November issue of Farmer’s Weekly, focused on how some of the proposals by role players at the Agbiz Grain Symposium regarding changes to quality differentiation of grains and oilseeds might create challenges that would tighten the cost squeeze on handling and storage. This article will further analyse some of these difficulties, specifically with regard to oilseeds.
As discussed at the symposium, oil processors have two requirements. First, they need the storage industry to deliver soya bean at a higher moisture content than the current maximum of 13%, but this will require a change to the grading regulations. Soya bean, unlike maize, cannot be dried in heated driers; it requires cool, dry storage conditions.
