Servicing the supermini Micra
2003 NISSAN MICRA K12 1.2
When the wedgy-looking Nissan Micra first appeared back in 1982, the all-new hatchback wasn’t particularly striking in its looks, but its reliability and frugal running costs soon made it an instant hit. The Japanese were onto a winner and 20 years later, the model had evolved into the third-generation with more curves and space.
CM ran one of these in 2014-2015 (see the July 2014 to January 2015 issues), and this is the car shown in this month’s DIY servicing guide. It is powered by a 1240cc twin-cam petrol engine with variable valve timing and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The recommended servicing schedule for the Micra K12 varies between sources, but considering these cars are 11-19 years old, it’s wise to be meticulous with routine servicing. Consequently, we’ve even shown how to inspect the timing chain tensioner, which can cause timing chain and timing issues if it is defective. However, some aspects can vary, such as the renewal of the spark plugs, where some spark plugs can last for 30-40,000 miles, but some service sheets recommend they should be replaced at 75,000 miles. So, our recommended service schedule errs on the side of caution.
