“I’m planning to get an EOS R5 and want to know if the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens and EF 2x Extender will autofocus, as it won’t on my DSLR?”

BRIAN SAYS… Most DSLRs require the max aperture of the lens and extender combo to be f/5.6, a few more recent models will focus with f/8 using a specific central AF points. Your combo would be f/9 to f/11, which is possible for the EOS R5 to focus with.

When going mirrorless the image sensor is used for AF and has a greater ability to focus with slower lenses. Canon makes the RF 600mm F11 lens and it works with a 2x extender and, still, focus is possible at f/22. What’s little known is that many DSLRs used in Live View will focus lenses
