Digging in

New Zealand’s struggles with reducing its globally embarrassing methane profile are the disappointing inverse of the beloved old Mitre 10 sandpit commercial. As one kid says in the ad, “she’s pretty big job” – and we’re “getting some bloke in” when ideally we would be doing it ourselves.

The Government has decided to “buy” other countries’ reductions to make up for the shortfall in our own projected improvements. That means the planet’s emissions should reduce overall, but New Zealand’s contribution will be somewhat indirect for the foreseeable future.
