STAY SAFE IN ROUGH SEAS

WHILE MOST ASPECTS OF small-boat handling can be practiced under controlled conditions, this is rarely the case when learning how to operate in rough seas. Most of us learn this lesson the hard way.

For many years I have stuck to a personal rule that if I develop even the slightest doubt about the weather, regardless of the forecast, I either move and find a more favourable area to fish or head for home.

When caught out in conditions that are going to test your boat-handling skills, the first thing you should do is to put on your lifejacket. Ideally, we should all wear one at all times when afloat,
