The forks on a Zed Nine are hardly the most sophisticated suspension devices; even back in the glorious 1970s they really didn’t shine, but they work better if they are returned to as-new condition.
Ordinarily I would suggest that the first job is to loosen the top bolt whilst the stanchion is being gripped by the top and bottom yokes, but in this case I couldn’t as the bike came in boxes. I gripped the stanchion in the six-inch soft jaws of my bench vice horizontally for maximum grip area and the plastic spanner then was able to loosen the fork cap.
