Early times

When you speak to most people who aren’t into Volkswagens and mention you have an old VW Bus, the usual question is, ‘Is it a Split Screen one?’ Followed by, ‘Do you surf?’ Groan.

Splits may be the most iconic of all VW Buses but, in the same way a ’67 Beetle is the best all rounder, there’s a lot to be said for an Early Bay Window when it comes to looks and practicality. Early Bays are undoubtedly the best compromise for a useable Bus that still retains some of the charm of the earlier models, and for that reason it’s the one many would choose, hands down, even if money was no object.

Liam Murphy from Folkestone in Kent would be inclined to agree. He also owns a T4, which ticks even more of the practicality boxes but, for many at least, doesn’t score so highly on the classic
