PANASONIC BOXES UP
PANASONIC HAS INTRODUCED its second box-style, modular pro-level video camera to join the existing Lumix BGH1 Micro Four Thirds model. However, the new Lumix BS1H uses the same full-frame sensor as the hybrid S1H and shares many of its features. It also uses the L mount which supports lenses from Panasonic, Leica and Sigma.
Despite the bigger sensor and mount, the BS1H is virtually the same size as the M43 model, and the box-form body is designed to make it easier to use in a video rig and to attach components such as a monitor or an external recorder. Consequently, it has all the industrystandard connections and interfaces – such as SDI, HDMI, Genlock IN and timecode I/O – as well as offering LAN with PoE+ for power and communications. V-Log and V-Gamut – giving a dynamic range of 14 stops – is provided to match the colour reproduction of Panasonic’s VariCam line of professional camcorders.
As on the S1H, the 24.2MP CMOS sensor employs Dual Native ISO technology that uses a dual gain readout – to give two base ISO settings – to optimise the image quality at higher ISO settings. The sensitivity range is equivalent to ISO 10 to 51,200 with extensions to ISO 50 and 204,800.
The BS1H captures uncropped 6K video – at 5952x3968 pixels – in the 3:2 aspect ratio at 24fps with 10-bit colour.
It also records 5.4K at 25/30p in the 3:2 aspect ratio or 5.9K at 25/30p in the 16:9 aspect ratio. Both 4K UHD and DCI recording is possible at 50/60p with 10-bit colour in the ‘Super 35mm’ format (very close to APS-C) and the more efficient H.265/HEVC codec. Using the sensor’s full area, 4K is recorded at 25/30p with 10-bit 4:2:2 and the H.264 codec. The BS1H has a built-in cooling fan to enable unlimited clip lengths, and internal recording is to a pair of memory card slots for SD devices. For recording to external devices via HDMI, it can output 4K video at up to 50/60p with 10-bit 4:2:2 colour (in the Super 35 format), and 5.9K at 24/25/30 fps (full frame) as a 10-bit or 12-bit RAW file to a supporting Atomos or Blackmagic recorder. Anamorphic 4:3 footage (at 3.5K resolution) can also be recorded externally as a 12-bit RAW file. Additionally, simultaneous external and internal recording is possible for creating backups.
Other features include HDR/HLG recording, variable frame rate (VFR) recording – giving up to 2.5x slow-motion with 4K and up to 7.5x with 2K – live streaming capabilities at up to 4K and 50/60p, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, front and rear tally lamps and smooth ‘Linear Focus’ control when using Lumix S-series lenses. Additionally, ‘Boost I.S’ stabilisation is available when using the S lenses, which have optical image stabilisation.
The Panasonic Lumix BS1H is available in Australia now priced at $5,299. For more information visit www.panasonic.com.au.
