On the face of it, Apple’s latest iPad doesn’t offer much of an upgrade over last year’s model (see issue 316, p88). It suffers from the same thick top and bottom bezels, is stuck on Wi-Fi 5 and still uses Touch ID rather than Apple’s Face ID unlock. But it doesn’t take long to see that Apple has performed its usual trick of upgrading just enough to make this a tempting purchase for both loyal buyers and first-timers.

For a start, it can be used with the first-generation Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard (sold separately at £89 and £159 respectively) for those times when you need a more laptop-style experience. It also ships with iPadOS 15 and its host of multitasking features for considerably less than the new iPad mini (), the iPad Air () and the).
