She’s electric, or maybe not

I’m new to the world of motorhomes and campervans, looking to buy our first ’van in the next year or two, so actively reading MMM to learn about the subject. I’ve obviously been looking at all the different types of ’vans on the market to start to understand the vast range of different types, options, etc.

However, one thing I have not yet come across is any information on what the 2030 ban on the sale of new cars and vans with petrol or diesel engines means to the world of motorhomes and campervans.

With the exception of one or two start-ups, for example, XBus  electricbrands.de offering very small ‘day van’ models in full electric form, I have not come across any information on what future electric options might be, maybe with the exception of VW and a possible electric California model.

I am therefore writing to ask what the electric outlook for motorhomes and campervans from the main suppliers is likely to be as 2030 is not that far away. And, secondly if I was to purchase a diesel ’van in the next year or two, do you have any ideas what the secondhand market for diesel-powered ’vans is likely to be as we head towards 2030? Is there potential that post-2030 these old diesel ’vans might be taxed more heavily?

It’s very easy for the Government to declare these cut-offs, but a lot more complex for the technology to be in place. I also assume electric ’vans will have some knock-on effects; for example, does this mean that sites might need new upgraded electrics to each pitch to enable overnight charging?

In fact, can the electrics of some larger sites cope if they have 100+ ’vans overnight needing both a normal electrical hook-up and a vehicle charge at the same time?

Furthermore, I guess we get into the whole electric range question, will it be a case of yes, you can have an electric camper, but the range is limited due to the vehicle’s weight?

Lots of questions and not too many answers yet.

It will be interesting to see if new entrants in the electric van market, such as will make its products available as future motorhome bases.
