Winterising essentials

You could be forgiven for thinking that, thanks to the UK’s seemingly milder winters, there’s no need to winterise your motorhome during periods of colder weather, but this might not be wise.

Remember the Beast from the East in February 2018? And weather broadcasters continue to warn about cold snaps. While the traditional winter season does seem to be shorter, there’s always the possibility of cold weather damaging your motorhome. So, what can you do to protect it?

It sounds obvious, but going out in your motorhome over winter is the best way to protect it and keep it in good condition.

Regular use keeps the engine’s fluids warm and free-flowing and prevents rubber belts from sitting in one position for long periods.

Equally, tyres won’t get flat-spotted and the batteries will be recharged via the alternator.

Using the heating and boiler in the habitation area ensures your water system will remain free of frost and not ice up.

While many campsites are seasonal, those that are open all year can be an eye-opening tonic for many campers. Gone are the queues and bustle of peak-season school holidays, replaced by the peaceful tranquillity of the colder seasons. Think relaxing winter walks and country pubs with roaring fires...
