Get away for... THE WEEKEND!
We knew Exmoor by reputation, but had tended to whizz by on our way to the honeypots of Devon and Cornwall. So, with three nights booked at the Caravan and Motorhome Club site at Minehead, we approached in excitement, stopping for a break in a handy parking spot in Chargot Wood in the Brendon Hills as we entered Exmoor National Park from the east. From here, we glimpsed our first view of open moorland and steep-sided wooded hills receding to the sea.
We were surprised to learn the industrial history of this part of Exmoor: this was the site of iron ore mining over 150 years ago and one of the impressive ventilation flues is still visible on the circular walk from the car park (there are no height barriers, but it has a narrow entrance).
Minehead proved to be an excellent base for exploring. All we knew of the town was its popularity as a seaside resort, complete with large holiday camp dominating one side of
