here had been motor sport in the area from the mid-thirties, but post-war local enthusiasts were thrilled with the legacy of a paved airstrip running almost north-south and measuring about 1.3km. At around 55 metres, it was wide enough to permit race traffic heading in both directions, but in reality was little more than a drag strip, which is what it was initially used for. Much of the work to prepare the strip for motor racing was done by local garage owner Snow Sefton, who, as legend has it, would ‘borrow’ road building machinery owned by the Pine Rivers Council after hours and without permission.
