SELF-PITY
Even if we do not recognise it, we have all secretly harboured the false friend of self-pity in our hearts. It is a sympathetic friend when no one else notices our sorrow. It does not contradict; it never blames us for our misfortune but always only others. It assures us that we are mistreated and afflicted with unjust suffering, and all our toil is in vain.
