Statton?’ I exclaimed. ‘That’s my surname!’ It was April 25, 1996 – Anzac Day – and my local paper had listed the names of Tasmania’s 13 Victoria Cross recipients. One was Sergeant Percy Clyde Statton.
I didn’t know much about medals, but I knew the Victoria Cross, or VC, was the most prestigious there was. Awarded for acts of bravery in wartime, it was our highest military honour.
