What is a supply chain crisis?

THE CEO of one of the world’s largest shipping companies has called on governments across the world to assist with the global supply chain crisis. This crisis means there are shortages in all sorts of products around the world – and experts believe it could continue until the end of next year.

Many local shops have been running low on items on their shelves or if you’ve tried to buy something online, they might have had to put your order on hold.

The problem isn’t just affecting South Africa. In countries around the world there are product shortages across all sectors of the economy – from toys, pencils and bags to more elaborate items such as fridges and electronic chips for cars and computers.

The situation is escalating, or getting worse, because products are in short supply and can’t be transported efficiently to the places where they are needed.
