our first curator ‘wearing beautiful shoes’ had as his central criterion in judging an artist's work and worth ‘a quality of reticence’. As for the second, his answer – 'It's not hard to tell who the salient artists of the period are' – he cannily slid past your question altogether with a bald statement that was both a subtle put-down and an incontestable truth. It's true because identifying those salient artists is not simply a question of a quasi scientific search for objectively observable qualities, it’s a complex communal decision.
