CAR COMPANIES and celebrity endorsements go back a long way, ever since Twiggy found herself at the wheel of a sponsored Mini back in the Swinging Sixties.

For Jaguar, and especially as it tried to reinvent itself under Ford’s stewardship, such associations were essential to help the company grow its appeal among younger customers, and, in 1999, the company pulled off a bit of a coup.

At the time, Michael Owen was just 20 years old and had made a name for himself as not only Liverpool’s star striker, but also as the youngest ever England footballer to participate in a World Cup, scoring one of the as a result. For a young lad just two years out of full-time education, it is an incredible story.
