Eagerly into autumn

THE summer has been kind. I am referring to the harvest of berries that are now available. A very good crop of blackberries, rowan berries, hawthorn and elderberries are hereabouts and (I hope) right across the length and breadth of these isles.

Our native bullfinches should not go hungry, nor the softbills that feed of those berries. Our winter visitors such as the fieldfares and redwings will be grateful to find a bounty of this kind on their landing. Aside from the food that will sustain
