THE ROUTE more or less plans itself – there aren’t that many roads to choose from. So from Lairg it’s the A839 until we hit the east coast and the A9 at Dornoch Firth. Mountain streams crisscross the road and it’s very pretty rather than dramatic.

Traffic is light and there are plenty of places to stop. A flask of coffee and a slice of cake would go down well but we didn’t think of that so we have to make do with raiding the glove box for a packet of mint humbugs.
