Before sunrise, you might well find artist Parusha Naidoo amidst a splash of mermaids in the icy waters of Cape Town’s southern peninsula. Restrictions enforced under the global pandemic prompted Parusha to embrace the early hours. ‘I started watching the sunrise during lockdown and it became a morning routine for my mental health,’ she explains.

Parusha’s friend, Roushanna Gray, an indigenous food expert who runs wild food foraging company Veld & Sea, introduced her to environmentalist Aaniyah Omardien, founder
