Of all the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) directors, Ray Hassall, as executive director, statutory compliance, has the highest public profile.
It would be surprising if it was any other way, given how many of his pronouncements naturally relate to issues that require explanation and action at the interface between the authority and those it regulates.
As with the other two senior regulators ATN has spoken to in this series, Hassall comes with long experience and expertise – for him, in policy, including with the National Transport Commission (NTC), and investigations with the Queensland government.
Indeed, he was considered a safe enough pair of hands to be NHVR acting CEO at one stage, in 2016.
