Unusual bulbs

DAFFODILS and tulips are the stars of the spring garden. They’re easy, colourful, reliable and inexpensive – what more can we ask? Well, something a little different, perhaps?

Don’t get me wrong, tulips and daffs have been on my list for planting this autumn, and probably always will be. But, while continuing to enjoy the old favourites, what about taking a look into the wider world of spring bulbs? And now’s the time to plant them.

Bulbs that are sold dry

As ever, I’m thinking about ‘bulbs’ in the broadest sense – in other words, underground storage organs. These comprise tubers, rhizomes, corms or true bulbs that are sold dry, not growing in pots, for autumn planting.
